Posture as a habit

September 30, 2024 by waldorfkate

Our habits can be changed, just as we can change our mindset. One way to do this is to bring the new habit into focus over and over again. In working with posture this might be returning to the positive experiences you had when you changed from slumped forward-falling shoulders, to an opening of the ribcage in the front of your body by using the space around you. These bodily memories (experiences) begin to build new habits. They can motivate us to try and try again!

A second way is to be part of a group where you witness others working with posture. (This is the most effective method we use in Spacial Dynamics® therapy sessions and classes.) When you see a friend transformed by wearing their body and their space differently you won’t forget the experience. Suddenly Joe looks more present, more ready to meet life, more beautiful. Witnessing such transformations changes your own habits and attitudes. You might think to yourself “I remember how Joe was standing and I am going to copy him!”
